Dr. Seuss started his career writing and illustrating for adults (including a WWII propaganda film/ troop education stint), and moved to children’s books after a suggestion from his publisher. (yay publisher!)
In his life, he published over 40 books which have been translated into over 15 languages and sold millions of copies. In addition to writing under the Dr Seuss pseudonym, he also used Theo Le Seig & Rosetta Stone (not the software).
From those works and the animated films based on them, Dr Seuss was awarded these prizes:
2 Academy Awards – (Oscars), one of which was for a documentary made during WWII, NOT his children’s work. The other winner is a much more familiar Dr. Seuss work.
2 Emmy Awards- I assume these are for the animated Cat in the Hat & the Grinch, but I can’t find any documentation.
PeabodyPrize
Laura Ingals Wilder Medal
Pulitzer Prize
Surprisingly, Dr. Seuss NEVER won the Caldecott (award for picture books) or the Newberry Prize; both of which are well-known and well-regarded prizes for children’s literature. 3 of his books were Caldecott runners up though (McElligot’s Pool (1937), Bartholomew and the Oobleck (1939), and If I Ran the Zoo (1950)).
